Leadership Competencies

In addition to the Institute Values, a team of individuals from WLPD, GTHR, IDEI, GTRI, and Faculty Affairs involved in leadership work across the Institute was charged with developing a leadership competency model that aligned with and complimented the Institute Values and current leadership programs and could be broadly applied across divisions. The primary question posed to this group was, “What are the key competencies needed to be a Georgia Tech leader?” The result of this cross-collaborative team was a comprehensive model focused on four high-impact leadership behaviors: Acts Strategically

How we manage conflict is a key differentiator as we seek to navigate and enrich relationships. In this highly interactive program, explore how you and others deal with conflict by learning about personal Conflict Management Style and a framework to leverage when working through conflict. Practice applying principles in any conflict situation through role-playing and classroom discussion. Learn extremely effective skills enabling you to be empathetic, even with people you might vehemently disagree with. Application of skills is specifically tailored to each person’s Conflict Management Style. In this way, everyone can become more of a creative problem solver.

DiSC: Flexing Your Style to Achieve Results Institute Values: Celebrate Collaboration

“Have you ever had a manager, colleague, or direct report who seems to be speaking a different language? Have you ever found yourself in a confrontation that seemed to have blossomed out of nowhere? If so, differences between personality styles may be to blame. The DiSC personality model explores the four primary styles — Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness — that individuals exhibit in their daily interactions. Through an in-depth understanding of your style and the styles of others, you can avoid common interpersonal issues and benefit from enriched relationships in every facet of your life. Do I want to lead others? Introduction to People Leadership - What is people leadership and do you really want it as a responsibility? In this leadership 101 session, participants will explore the different styles of people leadership and discuss different opportunities to develop people leadership skills. Emotional Intelligence Institute Values: Nurture Well-Being, Thrive on Diversity

Come and experience a day in the emotional intelligence lab where you will learn tools to help you achieve your desired professional and personal results. Explore a four-quadrant model that helps you to become more aware of your own emotions and the emotions of others, and then take that information to proactively manage yourself and your relationships. You will use the four-quadrant model to problem solve real-life case studies and create emotional intelligent experiments that apply specifically to your goals. Institute Value: Celebrate Collaboration

Fierce Conversations® teaches how to ignite productive dialogue that provokes learning, resolves tough challenges, and enriches relationships. It’s the place to begin the cornerstone of great leadership, healthy cultures, intelligent strategies, and whole-hearted execution. The simplest definition of a fierce conversation is one in which we come out from behind ourselves, into the conversation, and make it real. While many fear real, it is the unreal conversations that ought to concern us because they are incredibly expensive. Participants will learn to lead effective delegation conversations, meaningful coaching conversations, trans-formative confrontation conversations, and unleash the power that collaboration brings through effective team.

We’ve all heard the questions: “Where do you see yourself in five years? What about ten?” Whatever your answer, you can likely find the opportunity you’re looking for right here at Georgia Tech. This class will prepare you to seize control of your career by mastering the four core attributes of professional success and satisfaction: Self-awareness, Perception, Fundamental Skills, and Specialty Skills. The session uses discussion and storytelling to heighten your understanding of all four attributes and features a number of engaging activities to help hone specific strengths in each area. By building on the lessons learned in this class over time, you can come to own your career like never before.
